The techniques of traditional upholstery are highly skilled, as two layers of natural stuffings (plant fibre and animal hair) are built up and shaped with rows of hand stitching. Seats, backs and wings can all be upholstered in this way, giving a supportive and very durable result. If springs are used, they will be coils which are lashed down by hand. Traditional cushions are filled with feather or down. Materials are usually attached to the frame by tacks, but if the frame is delicate then it is sometimes kinder to use staples to avoid splitting the wood.
This is the Rolls Royce of upholstery, so regard it as an investment for the future, since it will give your furniture another fifty to a hundred years of use. If budget is limited, certain semi-traditional methods can be used, such as rubberised fibre sheets and layers of cotton felt instead of the first and/or second stuffings.
