A piece is re-covered if only the top fabric is replaced, whereas reupholstering involves replacing the stuffings as well. Both modern and antique furniture can be re-covered rather than reupholstered, if the stuffings are sound (although extra work is almost always required once the stuffings are uncovered).
Another option is to have removable covers made for your chair. These are tailored to fit as closely as possible and are usually fixed to the underside of the frame by hook-and-loop tape. This is a good option if the upholstery is in good condition, but not to your taste. Because the old fabric does not have to be removed, it is usually cheaper than recovering, although a lot of time still goes into the tailoring.
Our customers usually choose their fabric from our pattern books: Ross Fabrics and Cristina Marrone (Covertex). All these fabrics are Fire Retardant (FR) and hardwearing enough for upholstery. There is a wide range of designs and colours, ranging from £16 to £25 per metre. You can also provide your own fabric, as long as it is suitable for upholstery.
